Rabbit Colony
Topic: Rabbits

After I read about bucks needing to be housed separately, I never got into the whole "rabbit colony" idea.  BUT.  My older buck Magic jumped the fence into Leopold's yard. I had already figured this would happen. The fencing in between the yards is almost too tall for me to step over, but no problem for my rabbits - drat them!

Anyway, Magic and Leopold are now buds. I figured it was because Magic is just social and being a German he has such an easy-going personality. And Leopold is only 4 months old. Yes, they did the mock mating, but after that, they get along fine.

I hope to be getting more Jr's from Amanda in the next couple of weeks. 2 does and 1 buck. Again I will watch to see how Magic handles the buck, then introduce the new buck to Leopold.  I am excited to see how the does all work together. My doe needs a BFF.

My bucks lay next to her with the fencing in between to keep her company. I have her in "Alcatraz" where no one gets in or out. Plan on using that for the kindling/nursery area.

If this goes well, then I would like to build cages that allow for the colony enviroment.

:::doing the happy bunny dance::::

I recently started a Facebook group: Angora Bunny Spinners
https://www.facebook.com/groups/331515583565654/

I have met some great bunny people. I am very lucky as a woman in WA will be making a trip along I 90 to IA. There, another rabbit friend will meet with her and send bunnies back along I 90. The 3 bunnies are from this trip. Two does and one buck. The does carry the Satin gene. So I am all about Satin-izing the German Angora.

Scones
Topic: Scratch Cooking

Here is a scone recipe that I have used for several years. It is not a sweet morning sugar rush which is the reason we like it;

2 cups all-purpose flour

1/4 cup granulated sugar

2 teaspoons baking powder

1/8 teaspoon salt

1/3 cup unsalted butter, chilled

1/2 cup heavy cream or milk

1 large egg

1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1/4 cup frozen berries, slightly thawed

1 egg, mixed with 1 teaspoon water for glaze (optional)

Preheat oven to 350F.

Lightly butter a baking sheet.

In a food processor or by hand:

Stir together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.

Cut the butter into small cubes and distribute them over the flour mixture.

With a pastry blender or food processor, cut in the butter into the flour mixture until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs about the size of peas.

In a small bowl, stir together the cream (or milk), egg, and vanilla.

Add the cream (or milk), mixture to the flour mixture and stir until combines. Don’t over mix as it will make the scones tough

Stir in the 1/4 cup of berries

With lightly floured hands, pat the dough into a round, on a lightly floured cutting board. approximately 7 inches . Cut into 8 wedges, like a pie.

Lightly brush the tops of the scones with the egg mixture, if desired.

Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until lightly browned.

Hot Cocoa Mix from scratch
Topic: Stocking Up

Chocolate - it rules our lives. For several years my granddaughters Beth, Sarah and I have worked to perfected the ultimate survival food - HOT COCOA!

I took an online recipe and reworked it to fit our tastebuds:

 Hot Cocoa

Ingredients

2 cups powdered sugar

1 cup cocoa (We used ½ dark cocoa and ½ regular cocoa)

2 1/4 cups powdered milk

1 envelope of Dream Whip powdered whipping cream.

1 teaspoon salt

Directions:

Combine all ingredients in a bowl.  Mix evenly.

Fill your mug almost half full with the mixture and pour in hot water. Stir to combine. Seal the rest in an airtight container, keeps indefinitely in the pantry.

Time to take credit blame for "the kill".  Last night I decided to open up one of those boxes of au gratin potato mixes that I bought.  I had read that they store well and make good pepper food.

I made up the mix added ham from Yule dinner and put it in the oven as directed.

OMG!  2 bites and I pushed my plate away.  DH ate his and then mine.

So today he has not strayed far from the restroom :-(

Lesson learned.  If you do not eat this stuff, then there is no sense in storing it as a MRE kinda thing

Topic: Dehydrating

Here are my (goofy) granddaughters giving my apple chips the taste test. It is definitely “kid tested and kid approved”!

For apple chips I sliced the apples a little thinner and dehydrated them as usual.

To make it into a tasty snack, place sliced almonds on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Put this in the oven at 325 for about 6 minutes to toast. Once they are done, place in a bowl to which you have added dehydrated apple slices. Give this all a toss or stir to distribute evenly.

Drizzled raw honey (apiary bought) all over the mixture. Add enough honey to bind the mixture. Place this mixture on the cookie sheet you used to toast almonds. Don't worry that it is in big balls or globs. With the temperature still at 325, place in the oven.

After a couple minutes you will see the honey has warmed. Pulled the cookie sheet out and spread the mixture evenly -ish. Place the mixture back in the oven and keep your eye on it. It only takes a couple minutes more to brown.

I used parchment paper on the cookie sheet – Oh – the apples slices will be soft when you first take them out of the oven. Once it cools down it is a nice crunchy snack :-)

Rocket Stove Heaters

Rocket stoves are very, very cool.  With only twigs you can boil water and cook a meal.  With little money you can do all kinds of things.  I have been watching as more and more people here in the states are becoming very innovative.

They have been using them in the poorer parts of various countries for quite some time now.  Especially those that do not have access to larger trees to burn for fuel.

There was one video I watched where they showed this being used as a bench warmer.  People molded clay to form a bench.  They ran a heating pipe through the bench and on out the room.  No waste on the heat.

Dee Dee had posted this link  today.  I like it, but the guy didn't explain what parts he used:
